Character Strengths is an approach to teaching and learning that will support PSHE work in primary schools, along with PSED work during the Early Years. The 25 Character Strengths are related to achievement, life satisfaction and well-being in Children and Young Adults.

This resource is a set of 7 books, each based around a different 'Festival' that celebrates the Character Strengths. The Festivals are for implementing throughout the year in school and include a breadth of activity ideas, stories, assembly guidance and much more. There is a book for each of the 7 Festivals, below is a short description on what can be found in each book:

A Beginnings Festival - The start of a new year or new academic year is a mixture of excitement and anxiety, and by creating regular 'beginnings' traditions we can help to alleviate some of the anxiety for adults and for young people.

Performing Arts Festival - The performing arts festival is an opportunity to focus on the important elements of education that often get lost amongst the core curriculum subjects. This festival is about drama and dance, getting children to think about how they move, how they speak and ultimately, how they think.

Harvest Festival - A festival to give thanks for food and to encourage a focus on building strengths of Gratitude, Modesty and Fairness. This kind of festival teaches children about good hospitality - sharing with others and being modest, putting their guests' comfort before their own.

Our Community Festival - This festival is designed as an opportunity to think about what builds a strong and happy school community and also about the relationship of the school to the wider community, both local and international.

An Easter Festival - The Easter story is one of the world's most powerful narratives. This festival focuses on 3 Character Strengths associated with the story of Easter; Love, Kindness and Friendship. The book is suitable for all schools, including those with a mixture of faiths or with none at all.

Festival of Lights - During this festival the focus is on the Character Strengths of Hope, Spirituality, Humour and Patience. These strengths help point us to something beyond ourselves, which can add meaning and richness to our lives. The Festival of Light is always celebrated in the run up to Christmas, which can be a stressful time. One aim of this festival is to make the build up to Christmas calmer and more reflective.

An Endings Festival - Celebrating 'Endings' is an opportunity to look back, to notice what was good in the year that has gone, and to look forward to holidays and to the new term, the future. It is also about saying goodbye. 'Endings' can provoke different feelings for different people. Each ending reminds us at some level of previous endings in our lives and the emotions which new endings evoke.

The Festivals can be implemented at different times of the school year, but some will naturally align with other school events, such as Easter. Each book can provide you with a scheme of work for PSHE Education, and the suggested activities can be used with the whole school, a class or individuals.

All other resources in the Character Strengths range can be used to support the activities suggested in these books. Set of 7 books, paperback with approximately 36-46 pages. A5.
