What is Green Screening?

Green Screen, also known as Chromakey, is a video production technique often used in films, news and weather reports. Green Screen basically lets you add in whatever background image you want behind the actors to make the final image i.e. a reporter can be placed standing on the moon, when in fact they are filmed standing in front of a Green Screen in a studio – simple put, movie magic!

Traditionally Chromakey involved a complex professional studio setup with expensive software and equipment, however, along with the YouTube Generation come innovative ranges of more portable, safe and easy to use solutions, which mean that with little equipment and technical expertise, almost any location can be used as a Green Screen Studio.

Green Screen Tips and Tricks for better Chromakey Results

Lighting is important.

- More light = more colour and vibrance to your final image.
- Correct lighting positions - you need light on the green background and on the actor / subject, ideally with no shadow
- Good minimum set-up would include 4 lights = 2 soft box lights positioned to each side of subject and aimed on the back ground, and 2 soft box lights positioned in front of and aimed at the subject.

Spacing is important
As a rule of thumb, the subject should stand 2 steps in front of the back ground and the camera should be 4 steps in front of the subject. See note above for lighting positions. If the spacing between the background / subject / camera is out then it will be hard for your camera to create adequate results.
